5 Step Checklist Before You Buy Online Data Backup

Backup Online Unlimited, Online backup is by far the most convenient way to backup your files, emails, and pictures.

While it is very convenient, you can go wrong if you aren\'t paying attention to some of the details and choices you must make along the way when setting up your online backup plan.

Here\'s your checklist!

1. How long has the online backup company been in business?

There are a number of new companies out there but since this decision involves so much trust, I only recommend opting for companies that Backup Online Unlimited have been in business longer than 3 years, like Mozy, Carbonite, and SugarSync.

2. How much data do you have and how much to you want and need to store?

For home use, the easiest way is to choose a service like Mozy or Carbonite that allow for unlimited online storage. There are many services out there that offer pay by the gigabyte. They are no cheaper than the unlimited services, so unless you like keeping up with how much data you have, just go with unlimited.

3. Will the service allow for multiple computers or is the license for just one?

Most services for home only allow for one computer. If you have multiple devices you need to backup at your Backup Online Unlimited house, then a service like SugarSync that allows for more than one device will work better for you.

4. Will the online backup storage company allow me to create my own encryption key?

All files are encrypted before they leave your Backup Online Unlimited computer and then again when they arrive and are stored at the online backup company.

With many you can choose your own personal encryption key, but I recommend against that and leaving the encryption to the backup company.

Why? Well, if you choose your own key you\'ve got to remember where you put the key. If you lose it, you are out of luck - no one can open your files then, not even you. Just too much risk.

5. Do I need to see my files online real-time remotely or if I need to restore can I get a backup disk?

You pay a price - about double for - if you need to choose an online backup storage company that has a real-time online interface.

The more expensive professional versions of Mozy and Carbonite, as well as SugarSync, IDrive, and Elephant Drive, will allow you to interact with your stored files remotely.

Viewing and manipulating your most recently stored files can be a big advantage if you travel a lot.

Even with the unlimited cheaper services like Mozy and Carbonite, you can see which files have been stored, via the client software you install when you start the service.

Be careful on your initial setup and your online backup strategy will serve you for years to come.
